On Monday, March 18th, around noon, St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church experienced a fire in the main church area (for more information see the Chicago Tribune Article or the YouTube Video). The fire damage was primarily located on the north side of the solea (northeast corner of the nave) and spread to part of the balcony. While no one was injured, there is extensive smoke and water damage throughout the building. There was fire damage to a number of the wall icons, the pulpit and two stained-glass windows. The altar vessels were, thankfully, kept from harm.
There is much work ahead of us in restoring and rebuilding the parish to its former state. We ask for your prayers for God’s help and enlightenment as we move forward. Also, if you would like to support the work of rebuilding our church, please visit our Donate page for more information.
